Valve to Aid South American Dota 2 Through Movistar Liga Prize Support – The Esports Observer|home of essential esports business news and insights

Valve is beginning to deliver on its promise from last month by committing $45K USD to help organizer Live Media Esports Entertainment produce two tournaments under the Movistar Liga Pro Gaming brand with the goal of supporting the South American Dota 2 scene. The money will go to supporting the prize pools of these two competitions.

The publisher has previously contracted Live Media Esports Entertainment to operate the official Spanish-language broadcast of The International – Dota 2’s largest annual tournament.

The COVID-19 pandemic arguably impacted Dota 2 more than most other esports. The ecosystem relies entirely on the large prize pools awarded at international events to sustain its teams. With all of these tournaments canceled, Valve received heavy criticism for its slow response and lack of alternative competition options for the game.

Last month, the company issued a statement that it would commit to providing prize money support to regional tournaments for the remainder of the year in order to keep the ecosystem going until its international circuit could safely resume.
