Hyderabad: A dedicated centre for robot-assisted joint replacement surgeries ‘Sunshine Orthobotics’ was inaugurated at Sunshine Hospitals, Gachibowli.
On the occasion, a fourth generation robot for joint replacement surgeries MAKO robot was unveiled by Health Minister, Etela Rajender in the presence of star badminton player PV Sindhu and senior joint replacement surgeon and MD Sunshine Hospitals, Dr AV Gurava Reddy.
The MAKO robots were the only US FDA-approved robot capable of performing total hip replacements, in addition to total knee and partial knee replacements, doctors said.
“Robot-assisted surgery offers advantages including better patient outcomes, lower blood loss, quicker recovery and shorter hospitals stay. Use of robotic technology ensures improved accuracy of knee and hip replacement surgery. It also allows surgeons to perform partial knee replacement surgery which retains the healthy bone, muscles and cartilage ensuring faster recovery,” said Dr Gurava Reddy.
According to hospitals officials, MAKO Robotic System by Stryker was the highest selling robot in the world, with presence in 26 countries and having performed more than 3,00,000 surgeries over 13 years. “This system is the only true robotic technology that can be used across all the joint replacement surgeries,” Meenakshi Nevatia, MD, Stryker India said.
