Crops with limited damage in 2019, thanks to organic farming

Canova, whose brand is Almaverde Bio, drew a balance on 2019 which saw a boost in the second half of the year. “We got off to a very bad start,” explained director Ernesto Fornari, “because of the weather in May. The cherries underwent a major knockdown and it was only after the middle of June that we came out of it. We closed 2019 with a slight drop in revenues, around 2% compared to 2018”.

Cherries, apricots and even pears are the items that clearly made their way. Kiwis, khakis and clementines went much better, especially on the price front. “We are also satisfied with the strawberry campaign - added Fornari - thanks to a great response from the organic produce. In 2019, 35% of the total volume of our production, equivalent to 40 thousand tons, was sold abroad”.

With regard to stone fruits, yellow peaches suffered the most, as much as the non-organic ones. On the citrus front, some of them are growing and others are more affected.

“We certainly need a varietal renewal,” pointed out the director, “because our Spanish competitors have clementines of a higher average calibre. Moreover, it can be useful to reduce the size of the plant in certain seasons and particular conditions in order to help the plant to ripen a smaller number of fruits, but of a larger calibre. Compared to the price, the difference between a small sized fruit and a large one is quite remarkable”.

Canova supplied around 2000 tonnes of organic clementines and the request was higher than the supply. “What matters is to keep up with the times,” concluded Fornari, “and not be afraid of new trends. Instead, we need to keep on looking for and dedicating our efforts towards innovation”.
