DOE offers up to $40 million for battery and electrification research
The Department of Energy (DOE) will provide up to $133 million for advanced vehicle technologies research, including $40 million for research into batteries and electrification. Those research topics include:
- Developing Li-ion batteries using silicon-based anodes
- Low-cost electric traction drive systems using no heavy rare earth materials
- Utility managed smart charging supporting projects that will demonstrate managed and controlled charging loads for a large number of vehicles
The funding is part of the DOE Energy Storage Grand Challenge. Additional program topics include advanced combustion engines and fuels, energy-efficiency mobility systems, materials technology, technology integration, and transportation and energy analysis.
Concept papers are due February 21, 2020, and full applications will be due April 14, 2020.
