The BASF Group is committed to achieving clear and quantifiable objectives by 2030 to promote sustainable agriculture. The company will help farmers achieve a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions per tonne of crops produced. In addition, the division will also increase its share of turnover by up to 7% annually consisting of solutions that contribute substantially to sustainability throughout the value chain. Finally, the company will introduce digital solutions on more than 400 million hectares of cultivated land and its products will be accompanied by precise indications in terms of stewardship.
The new commitments reinforce the implementation of the company’s agriculture strategy launched in 2019. Livio Tedeschi, senior vice president of the company’s Agricultural Solutions division in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: “A healthier and more sustainable food system is one of the foundations of the European Green Deal. Although the roadmap and objectives related to the Farm to Fork strategy and biodiversity are still in their initial phase, the direction is clear: European farmers are called upon to further optimize inputs, help increase biodiversity and mitigate climate change. , with particular attention paid to greater digitalisation and organic farming ”.
Basf R&D has developed solutions that promote the efficient use of resources and reduce the environmental footprint. For example, the solutions based on the Revysol fungicide, which make it possible to obtain a 4% increase in wheat yields on already existing cultivated land, allowing farmers to protect the natural habitat. Or the targeted application of BioSolutions, such as Rak pheromones that interfere with the reproduction of some species of moths, protecting plants throughout their life cycle, in the form of natural adjuvants that complement the defense of conventional crops. The Agricultural Solutions division will contribute to the Group’s targets, equal to 22 billion euros in turnover by 2025, through accelerator products, which make a contribution to sustainability throughout the value chain.
Finally, the company offers access to stewardship tools and services that are tailored to the daily work of each farmer. These include protective equipment, customized training, digital solutions and new application technologies. The easyconnect closed barrel transfer system, for example, is the result of collaboration between various partners and supported by key players in the agrochemical industry, with the launch on the market scheduled for 2021/22.
