Johnson C. Smith University and Riot Games Partner for Esports Collaboration

Johnson C. Smith University’s Metropolitan College of Professional Studies has joined forces with video game publisher Riot Games in establishing what is being described as an “esports and gaming trifecta.” The trifecta in this instance means students will see an offering by the historically black university that includes an esports and gaming management academic program, a JCSU Esports Lab, and help in guiding the Golden Bulls Esports Club. Additionally, an esports-focused ESG (electronic sports & gaming) certificate program will be offered.

This partnership marks JCSU as the first HBCU to offer these programs together. Through the partnership, Riot Games will provide the university with curriculum support, guest lecturers, industry consultation, scholarships, esports lab equipment, internships, and career insights to students participating in the esports and gaming programs.

JCSU’s partnership with Riot Games comes at a time where HBCUs are seeing a surge in esports partnerships. Recently, Twitch and Cxmmunity announced that they would be facilitating a new esports league that would help the schools involved gain access to educational and scholarship support with the aim of closing the diversity gap associated with the gaming industry.
