GO Teams to Make the Major – The Esports Observer|home of essential esports business news and insights

With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing tournament organizers to cancel live events and go online, ESL has announced that the IEM New York Event 2020 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive event will in fact be played online starting Oct. 6. IEM New York 2020: Online is the last event in which North American and CIS teams can compete in a Valve Regional Major Ranking event. The RMR events allows teams the opportunity to earn points in order to qualify for the ESL One Rio Major Major originally scheduled for May, now scheduled for November.

The RMR system was introduced as a way to make sure that the 24 teams invited to participate in the Major are in top form. This is a change from the way the previous Majors worked, as before the top 14 finishers from the previous Major received automatic invites to the next event which could be six or more months away. The ESL One Rio Major Major will have a $2M USD prize pool and will see the entire 24 team field created through invites.

Additionally, the tournament will have three divisions (North America, CIS, and Europe), with each region offering ESL Pro Tour points which allows teams to earn points to get entry into the Masters Championship in Katowice 2021.
