Kasaragod: Despite hostile weather, paddy cultivated in the fields in Alakode was safely harvested before the onset of Northwest monsoon. It was all the result of hard work by Uduma MLA K Kunhiraman. Also a CPM district leader, he prefers to toil in the fields instead of making others work.

Kunhiraman is familiar with farming as he used to help his father from a very young age. After taking the required paddy for his household, the rest is given to the labourers as wage. He believes that the wage should be given as paddy itself as it is the result of hard work by labourers.

This time, Uma paddy seeds collected from Panayal Krishi Bhavan was cultivated. It was sowed after Vishu amid lockdown. The 2-acre land was prepared by mixing chicken manure and cow dung. After the rain started, the saplings were replanted.

Daily wage workers from Pallikkara panchayat also helped the MLA in completing the work. Kunhiraman’s siblings Damodaran, Narayanan and Karthyayani and his wife Padmini also accompany Kunhiraman for farm works. Agriculture officer K Venugopalan supplied the organic pesticide to control pest menace.

Harvest started on October 9. Though they waited for the machine for harvesting, it was not available at the right time. With this, the MLA gathered his relatives and some labourers and harvested the paddy. They could collect 200 Para (traditional unit) of paddy this time.

The MLA said that they could have produced more if the rain had not wreaked havoc. Now they are all waiting the water puddle to dry so that vegetables can be planted in the field. Even at 72, the MLA smoothly handles politics and farming at the same time.
