Charged EVs | Taiga electric snowmobiles and personal watercraft to come with ABB chargers

Taiga electric snowmobiles and personal watercraft to come with ABB chargers

Taiga Motors, a Montreal-based startup that was founded in 2015, plans to begin delivery of its electric snowmobiles this winter season and to bring its Orca electric personal watercraft to the market next spring.

The skyrocketing sales of “powersports” vehicles may take a disproportionate toll on the environment, because many of these vehicles are not required to have catalytic converters. According to Global Market Insights, electrifying one snowmobile could have the same environmental impact as electrifying forty cars. Eliminating noise pollution is also a priority at many national parks, lakes and off-roading areas.

Now Taiga has announced a partnership with EVSE powerhouse ABB. The exact details of the arrangement aren’t on offer, but the companies are saying that the partnership will provide “a turnkey solution to customers.” Taiga plans to sell its electric snowmobiles to fleet customers.

ABB will offer its Terra AC wallbox and Terra DC wallbox charging stations across North America and Europe, “making it easier for recreational riders and fleet operators to charge their off-road vehicles at marinas, ski resorts, popular trails, and even remote riding areas such as the mountainous backcountry. ABB’s charging stations, designed to work in harsh weather conditions, are a perfect fit, as these vehicles will be operated in some of the most extreme environments.”

“We envision a future where riders can explore the great outdoors without transporting fuel,” said Taiga co-founder and CEO Samuel Bruneau. “Renewable-powered batteries can be placed in remote areas to provide off-grid charging, so adventurers can simply plug in and go further than ever before.”
