Hyundai announces 12 new SUVs—one of them may be an EV

Like most of the legacy automakers, Hyundai has been eagerly announcing plans to consider possibly selling some EVs in volume some time in the next decade or two, while continuing to devote the bulk of its resources to ever-larger gas-powered SUVs.

In August, the company launched a new brand called Ioniq, which will, in the future, be dedicated to battery-electric vehicles. Hyundai’s existing Ioniq hatchback, which was introduced in 2016, is available in hybrid, PHEV and EV versions.

Now the company has announced “a commanding product blitz of 12 new and enhanced SUVs continuing through the 2021 calendar year.” These will include internal combustion, hybrid, plug-in and BEV models.

The new or improved models include the Tucson, Santa Fe, Kona, Santa Cruz and “a new dedicated-platform, electrified Ioniq SUV.” Hyundai isn’t offering any details at this point, and it isn’t clear if the “electrified Ioniq SUV” will be an EV or a hybrid. (Automakers usually use the term “electrified” to refer to hybrids, but in August, Hyundai said that Ioniq would henceforward be an EV-only sub-brand.)
