Apple begins accepting macOS Big Sur apps as it seeds second release candidate

Apple has released the second macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 Release Candidate to developers at the same time as it has opened up app submissions for the new operating system.

The new Release Candidate, which carries a build number of 20B28, comes ahead of the official release of macOS Big Sur on Thursday. Developers can acquire the new build from the Apple Developer Portal or as an over-the-air update in System Preferences.

In addition, Apple has opened up submissions for macOS Big Sur apps built with Xcode 12.2. The company is now accepting Universal apps that can take full advantage of upcoming Apple Silicon Macs, which became available for preorder on Tuesday and will ship next week.

“Your apps will look better than ever on macOS Big Sur, thanks to an all-new interface that’s been finely tuned for the powerful features that make a Mac a Mac. New widget features and the new widget gallery can make your app visible at a glance. And much more. Build your apps with Xcode 12.2 Release Candidate, update your product pages, and submit your apps for review today,” Apple wrote.

The Cupertino tech giant also announced a new option to build and distribute custom Mac apps to organizations and schools. Developers will be able to “provide a tailored look and feel, security features for sensitive data, special functionality for workflows, and much more, then distribute privately on Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.”
